Some greening methods may cause illness for occupants, unless we incorporate human health as an overriding greening requirement. Examples include materials that off-gas and building envelopes that allow condensation and mold growth. Greening and health can be combined efficiently in buildings, by using low-pollution interiors, economical ventilation and full air movement control using air barriers. The program will help participants gain a better understanding of health hazards in buildings, and how greening methods can impact health in buildings. They will gain more specific knowledge about material off-gassing and mechanisms by which condensation and mold growth may occur within building envelopes. Finally, they will learn how to incorporate health considerations into green buildings, along with the use of air sealing technologies that can assist in making green buildings healthier by controlling air movement across the building envelope.
