Mark your calendars for the 2011 AIA Arizona State Conference, “Impact Your World,” on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel at Wild Horse Pass (same as last year).

Hear about how architects are impacting the world around them: from the use of innovative design tools, to proactively influencing their business environment, from the shaping of our future leaders, to utilizing sustainable design as a vehicle for social change.

Also, the Design Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011. The Call for Entries for the Awards will be coming out in mid-April. Watch your email for all the latest news.

Sustainability Training Program Information Session – The City of Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department/Workforce Connection Division is partnering with AIA Phoenix Metro to offer scholarships for AIA
members to attend sustainability training with the Sustainability Building Adivsor Institute and Maricopa Community Colleges. These scholarships will be paid for with federal State Energy Sector Parnership (SESP) and training grants. Please join us for an information session on Tuesday, April 5th from Noon to 1:00 p.m. in the AIA Arizona Conference Room. RSVP to Diana Smith. Click for more information.

Art by Architects
– AIA Phoenix Metro Chapter members, Affiliate and Associate members and their spouses are encouraged to submit fine art work for the annual Art by Architects compeition and display. Click here for the competition fact sheet. Click here for an entry form. Entries are due in the AIA Arizona office on Saturday, April 16th between 9am and 12pm.

Grand Canyon Chapter Meeting – On April 15, 2011 at Noon in the Weatherfor Hotel in Flagstaff, Chris Lanterman from NAU, will be presenting on the principles of universal design, various applications of these principles, and how they can support environmental, economic, and social sustainability. IGCC Public Version 2.0 – With the May 16-22 code development hearings fast approaching, the AIA’s Codes Advocacy team wanted to alert you to the public availability of the comments to Public Version 2.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IGCC). Click here.

Macro Photography Workshop – Creating an artistically pleasing photograph takes a combination of technical skill and an eye for composing a visually-appealing image. Tom Reich, AIA, AIA Arizona Photography Competition multi-award winner, will share insights into the techniques, equipment and artistic considerations involved in the fascinating realm of close-up/macro photography on Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 10am to 2pm. Phoenix Metro Chapter Meeting – On Thursday, April 7th at 6pm at the Bridge at the ASU Design School, Sean Murphy Prize winners, Lauren Loosveldt  and Trevor Peterson, speak on the culture, climate and context of Bangladesh, as well as the emotion and connection of Japan. CALA Residential Landscape Workshops – A new series of workshops offered by the University of Arizona College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture teaches participants how to transform their ordinary residential landscapes into distinctive garden rooms for outdoor living.
