Survival 101 Seminar – Teamwork Lessons from 12 Angry Men

Building consensus in a group is not always easy, as illustrated in the classic movie 12 Angry Men, where initially 11 men on a jury are convinced that the defendant is guilty of murder, and only one man has no doubt of his innocence.  How can the one man steer the others towards the same conclusion he has reached?

There are practical team building lessons to be learned from analysis of this movie that come by observing the behavior of each of the jurors over the course of the film.

You will learn such techniques as understanding motives and biases, considering attitudes about risk taking, dominant and submissive personalities and conflict resolution. If you have seen this film before, you will certainly be viewing it in a new light, and if you haven’t seen it before, you can enjoy the ongoing critique of the characters that this Survival 101 course will allow attendees to participate in!

Many of you have received an email from McGraw-Hill asking you to subscribe toArchitectural Record. As you know, for many years this has been the main publication for AIA members. However, beginning in January 2011, you will begin to receive a hard copy of Architect, plus Eco Structure andResidential Architect in electronic form from Hanley Wood.

If you wish to continue to receive Architectural Record, you will need to subscribe as this will no longer be one of your many membership benefits.

The Really Big Show!
Kevin Morrow Headshot
AIA Arizona’s annual State Conference was held on August 19th at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass conference center. The general consensus is that the day was a real success. Kudos to the State Conference Committee, led by our President- Elect Joe Worrall,  AIA.
I believe the success was driven by the theme “The Road Ahead,” addressing our futures in the profession. The theme was further reinforced by a diverse group of presentations that demonstrated collaboration among our membership and between our design schools.

Other indicators of the conferences’ success include the attendance of over 200 participants that helped AIA Arizona to meet its sponsorship goals, and a huge trade show by The Reference Library.

Lastly, for me, the success can be found among the non-tangibles of the idea exchange and friendship building that a State Conference provided.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s Really Big Show, and if you want to come to the “Really, Really Big Show,” the Western Mountain Region Conference is around the corner (October 8-9) in Deer Valley, Utah. Don’t miss the early bird rate (deadline September 20). Register here.

Thanks for the opportunity!

Kevin Morrow, AIA

You may have taken the time to watch our two videos that we produced last year, “Why Hire an AIA Architect, ” and “Why Become an AIA Member.” CGI Communications produced these marketing materials for AIA Arizona and they would like to partner with you too.

CGI will be contacting you to offer you the opportunity to take advantage of their digital tools (video email, video business cards, testimonials and promotional videos), enabling members to utilize these products in an effort to achieve added exposure, and increase communication with your clients.

We encourage you to consider CGI as it provides an exciting new opportunity to showcase architecture, your business and AIA Arizona.

Just the Facts, Please… AUG | 25 | 2010
Dear Alexandra,

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors for the State Conference, which was last week. We couldn’t have done it without you. I also want to thank all of you that attended.

I have noticed some comments on the evaluation forms that I would like to address. Many of you would like to see this conference held in a more central location, possibly along the light rail, and I wanted to remind you that this is a statewide conference with many members attending from Tucson. Each year I try to pick a location that has easy access from I-10 to be considerate of those making the long trek to the Phoenix Metro area.

Many of you have also requested that the time for the Tradeshow be reduced or have the Tradehow after the keynote speaker. It is difficult to reduce the time for the Tradeshow  because The Reference Library sells that space to the exhibitors and they want plenty of time to chat with all of you. If we did the Tradeshow after the Keynote Speaker, many of you would not enter the Tradeshow and then it is not beneficial for the exhibitors. The revenue from the Tradeshow, along with the sponsorships, helps to reduce the  registration fee that you pay to attend. The Conference Committee will discuss this further at the wrap-up meeting and see what we can do.

Again, thank you for taking the time to speak and/or attend the 2010 State Conference.

Don’t forget the 2010 AIA Arizona Awards Gala is Saturday, September 25th at the Phoenix Art Museum. Watch for your invitation, as they are being mailed this week, or register now by clicking here.
